niet zo standaard

(not so standard)

As a designer and coffee enthusiast, I got fascinated by just how minimal a coffee maker for pour-over coffee can be. During the design process I explored several minimalist coffee maker ideas, all with as little support for the filter as possible.

Some of the designs were very promising and might see the light of day in the future; some had too little support for the filter, resulting in coffee spilling all over the place, whoops… The final result strikes a nice balance, it is a functional coffee maker but it also makes you wonder if it should be possible at all.

The unsupported filter changes the brewing process, resulting in a cleaner profile compared to regular pour-over coffee maker. Above all, it offers a unique perspective to pour-over coffee brewing; you could say it is niet zo standaard (not so standard).

niet zo standaard was designed for the Standard Shipping Exposition at the 2025 Dutch Design Week. Together with eleven other designers, I accepted the challenge to design a product that fits in a standard Dutch mail parcel.
